Perhaps no other phrase in the comic book genre applies to daily life as much as Spider-Man's famous, "With great power comes great responsibility." Such a phrase has guided Spider-Man throughout his career, but occasionally the thought comes up: what if he didn't follow this famous mantra, and instead used his powers for selfish reasons? While "Chronicle" may not be related to Spider-man, it perfectly explores what would happen if the famous saying was ignored.

"Chronicle" follows three high school kids who have pretty ordinary lives: one is running for class president, one is the shy type whom nobody likes, and the last is the outgoing, energetic type. One night, while at a rave, the three come across something mysterious, and find themselves in possession of powers that allow them to manipulate things with their minds. As expected, they start off doing pranks (like using a leaf blower on skirts, for example), but as time goes on, being in possession of so much power can be dangerous...and even deadly.

Even among the glut of superhero and found-footage films, "Chronicle" manages to stand out, in most-part, due to that it's not really a superhero film: rather, it's really a story about how absolute power corrupts absolutely. While I was watching the movie, I was really surprised to find myself being more interested in the teens, rather then the powers they wield. All three are best friends, and they're good at heart, but are not above using their powers to mess with people's heads. Andrew, in particular, is one of the most interesting film teenagers I've seen in recent memory, due to his miserable home life, and how he reacts with his new-found abilities. Yet, from the beginning, it's clear that the power is inevitably going to corrupt the teens, which leads to a extraordinarily powerful third act that that genuinely had me more interested in what Andrew and the others were going to do, and not in the action that was taking place around them.

Even though there have arguably been too many superhero and found footage films over the past few years, "Chronicle" manages to feel fresh and exciting. While it's faults are few (the CGI is at times a bit obvious), the strength of it's storytelling more then makes up for any flaws. It's an unexpectedly gripping and thrilling film that focuses on the emotional consequences of how extraordinary powers corrupt ordinary people, rather then on spectacle and action, as other films would have done, and for that, I highly recommend it.

The trailer pretty much shows what you will see in the movie. It's got a sense of humor that will make adults laugh as well as the under 10 year old set. It spoofs well known movies and uses worn out cliches to comic effect. The visual and sound quality are very well done for a straight to DVD type movie.

Overall, this movie is very entertaining. I didn't roll my eyes or groan much, if at all. Two thumbs up

No, this isn't the old Fess Parker television series, but rather a fairly standard frontier adventure programmer from Republic Pictures that was made in the mid-1950s. There's a reasonable amount of action, drama, and even some song, as Daniel Boone and his followers attempt to make a new life for themselves in the wilderness at Boonesboro.

There are no "name" stars here, save minor ex-Tarzan Bruce Bennett (former Olympic shot-putter Herman Brix), Lon Chaney, Jr., and country music star Faron Young, who does get a chance to belt one out. Bennett was in his mid 40s when he made this film and, indeed, looks the part of a father with grown children. The performances of the actors reflect the film's "B-movie" status . . . capable enough for the material, though I find the perpetually grinning Freddy Fernandez (portraying Boone's son Israel) to be annoying. In the middle of the climatic battle, there's Fernandez grinning away like an idiot (I wonder what ever happened to him?). All in all, though, this is a fairly watchable film that's helped by its short running time (approximately 75 minutes).

I have mixed feelings about this DVD transfer. I'm sure at the time of its initial release, "Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer" was probably a very good looking film. However, the print that Brentwood Communications has used has washed out colors and is "soft" looking, but the audio is fine. This is the type of film that probably could only be released on DVD through an independent budget video company; it's highly unlikely that any major studio would release this film on DVD. So, in that repect, viewers looking for older, hard-to-find films on DVD should probably be thankful to the independent video companies for searching out and releasing films like "Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer."

One of the most pleasant surprises of the television season came courtesy of MTV with the clever comedy "Awkward." In truth, I didn't expect much more than a retread of typical high school cliches served up by super stylized and self-aware characters. Yes, "Awkward" does adhere to many classic elements that we've seen in countless other productions, but here they seem fresh, updated, and quite smart. "Sixteen Candles" and "Heathers" are two high school films with strong female protagonists that I really connected with many years ago. I'd be proud to say that "Awkward" sticks closely to the successful formula of the past and modernizes it for contemporary audiences. Combining the sweet awkwardness (for lack of a better word) of "Sixteen Candles" with the brutal ruthlessness of "Heathers," this show is an expert blend of black comedy, romance, and outright slapstick. And it's terrifically entertaining with savvy and quotable dialogue.

Ashley Rickards plays the central character of Jenna, a normal teen experiencing the expected angst of growing up today. Jenna is sort of an every girl character--grounded and relatable, smart without being overly precious. She's not particular popular, but has had a clandestine affair with the boy of her dreams over the summer. She receives a biting and critical letter anonymously that savages her very existence. Before she has time to process it, though, she has a mishap that everyone believes is a suicide attempt. Suddenly, Jenna is thrust into the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Season One consists of twelve episodes that show Jenna gaining in confidence as she adapts to her newfound fame, attempts to unlock the mystery of the letter, and tries to woo her secret lover into a public relationship when his best friend is also smitten with her. Rickards is backed by an able and enthusiastic cast, but this is largely her show. And you really do care about what will happen to her.

While the comedy of "Awkward" is heightened, the show does a great job highlighting real situations kids go through. The episodic scripts are tight, focused, and funny and all build upon one another. Aside from the writing and Rickards, I'll highlight a few standouts. Molly Tarlov as the resident mean girl and Desi Lydic as a well meaning guidance counselor are played to the hilt (over-the-top even, but hysterical) and get many of the best lines. Nikki Deloach scores as an over-involved mother that wants to relive her youth and Jillian Rose Reed is reliably saucy as a best friend. Then there's Beau Mirchoff (better used here than he was on Desperate Housewives) and Brett Davern as the other two sides of Rickard's romantic triangle. This triangle had the most potential for disaster--yet it plays alternately sweet, sad, and blisteringly funny. Just as you know it will figure prominently in the season's final episode (and it does), the last scene serves up an even bigger surprise setting the stage for Season Two. The show was officially picked up, so now is the chance to catch up. I may not be the intended target audience for "Awkward, but nevertheless--I was thoroughly charmed. KGHarris, 9/11.

This particular episode is one of my favorites and a definite must see. And if your able to watch this with a group of people I highly recommend you do so. The snide comments are timed so perfectly as expected with the cast of MST3K but with this movie the jokes are truly clever.

I've just finished watching "High Society" after having first seen "The Philadelphia Story" only a month ago. Both films are phenomenal, on their own and shouldn't be compared. They succeed wonderfully in very different ways. The cinematography of "High Society" is excellent and is one of the major factors of it's success. In many ways, it makes it a very, dare I say, 'modern' musical, not seeming at all fluffy or schmaltzy. The musical numbers are intimately filmed, and with Cole Porter's music and lyrics, it works amazingly well. Case in point..."Well Did You Evah". I believe this to be one of Sinatra's best roles, quite cool, charming, and thoroughly convincing. And then he sings...and all is well with the world. Bing is at his cool best and Grace Kelly is stunningly beautiful, even with her role's snobbery fully intact. It is a shame that Sinatra and Bing only had one other movie together "robin and the Seven Hoods" because their chemistry is unsurpassed. Add the jazz and personality of Satchmo, and what you have is one of the most enjoyable 107 minutes that you could spend in front of the tube. Highly recommended. Let's hope the DVD version is in the works!
